How Do Acne Scars Form?

Acne scars are generally the result of inflamed blemishes caused by skin pores engorged with excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. When the pore swells, it causes the follicle wall to break. While a shallow lesion will heal quickly, a deep break in the pore wall will cause infected material to overflow into the surrounding tissues. This creates a deeper lesion. Acne scars can be atrophic, meaning there is a loss of tissue. These depressed scars are referred to as either “icepick” scarring or “boxcar” scars.

When Is Surgery Best?

More severe cases of acne may need surgical intervention. Depressed and sunken areas of skin improve only marginally from needle-stimulation therapies or facial fillers. Severe acne scarring may not fully respond to chemical peels or even laser treatments. In such cases, excision and closure techniques may be best.
